    Overview

Prek Toal is the most important waterbird sanctuary in Southeast Asia, located on the northwestern shore of the Tonle Sap lake in Battambang Province. This floating community sits at the edge of a vast biosphere reserve that hosts some of the largest breeding colonies of rare waterbirds in the region — including spot-billed pelicans, milky storks, painted storks, greater adjutants, and several species of cormorants and herons.

The Prek Toal community tourism program combines floating village visits with guided bird sanctuary boat tours. Community members who once collected bird eggs and chicks for sale now serve as nest guardians, bird guides, and boat operators. The transformation from egg collectors to bird protectors is one of Cambodia's most compelling conservation success stories, and tourism revenue is the economic engine that makes it sustainable.

    Activities & Experiences

    Bird Sanctuary Boat Tour

Community boats navigate through the flooded forest to elevated observation platforms overlooking breeding colonies. Spot-billed pelicans, painted storks, greater adjutants, and dozens of other species nest in enormous numbers.

    Observation Platform Visits

Climb to elevated wooden platforms built among the trees for eye-level views of nesting birds. During peak breeding season (December-April), the platforms offer extraordinary close-up observation.

    Floating Village Tour

Navigate through the Prek Toal floating community — several thousand people living on the lake. Visit the floating school, pagoda, and market.

    Sunrise Bird Watching

Pre-dawn departures for the sanctuary when birds are most active — hundreds of pelicans and storks taking flight as the sun rises over the Tonle Sap is a spectacular sight.

    Community Conservation Talk

Meet former egg collectors who now protect nesting birds. Hear firsthand how the community's relationship with the bird colonies transformed through the conservation-tourism program.

    Tonle Sap Ecosystem Tour

Extended boat tours onto the open Tonle Sap to understand the broader lake ecosystem — flooded forests, fish breeding grounds, and the lake's unique flow reversal phenomenon.

    How to Book & Participate

    • Prek Toal tours are best arranged through the Osmose organization (Siem Reap-based) or the Sam Veasna Center.
    • All-inclusive day trips from Siem Reap: $70-100 per person including transport, boat, guide, and sanctuary entry.
    • Budget option: arrange independently through Battambang boatmen ($30-40 per person in groups).
    • The sanctuary entry fee ($20) directly funds community ranger salaries.
    • Overnight options are available at the floating eco-lodge within the community ($50-80/night).
    • Peak season (December-March) requires advance booking; off-season visits are more flexible.

    Benefits for the Community

    • Former bird egg and chick collectors are now employed as nest guardians with stable salaries funded by tourism.
    • Community boat operators earn year-round income from bird sanctuary tours.
    • The floating eco-lodge employs local families in hospitality — cooking, cleaning, and hosting.
    • Sanctuary entry fees fund the community ranger program that protects nesting colonies 24/7 during breeding season.
    • Environmental education programs supported by tourism have fundamentally changed community attitudes toward bird conservation.

    Conservation Notes

    • Prek Toal hosts the largest breeding colonies of spot-billed pelicans and painted storks in Southeast Asia.
    • The greater adjutant, one of the world's rarest storks, nests here — Prek Toal is critical for the species' survival.
    • Community nest guardians have reduced egg and chick theft to near zero — breeding success has increased dramatically.
    • The Prek Toal Core Area is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its global ecological significance.
    • Long-term bird population monitoring shows significant recovery of all major breeding species since the tourism-conservation program began.
