Koh Rong

Overview

Koh Rong is Cambodia's largest island, located about 25 kilometers off the coast of Sihanoukville. With 43 kilometers of white sand beaches, dense jungle interior, and some of the most spectacular bioluminescent plankton in Southeast Asia, it's Cambodia's premier beach destination.

The island has developed significantly but retains a backpacker-friendly vibe alongside more upscale options. The main hub, Koh Touch village, offers restaurants, bars, and nightlife, while other parts of the island remain pristine and peaceful. Despite development, electricity can still be limited in some areas, adding to the off-grid charm.

Best Time to Visit

Koh Rong's tropical climate has distinct seasons:

• November to April: Dry season—best weather, calm seas, clear water for snorkeling. Peak tourist season with higher prices. Best bioluminescence visibility.
• May to October: Wet season—rough seas may delay ferries. Some resorts close. Those open offer significant discounts. Fewer tourists, dramatic skies. Swimming still possible between storms.

The shoulder months (May and November) can offer good weather with fewer crowds. Avoid visiting during heavy monsoon months (August-September) when ferry cancellations are common.

Beaches

Koh Rong has diverse beaches for every preference:

• Koh Touch Beach: Main beach near the pier with restaurants, bars, and accommodation. Lively atmosphere, good for socializing.
• Long Beach (Sok San): 7km stretch of pristine white sand. Quieter, more upscale. Some of the island's best resorts. Stunning sunsets.
• Lonely Beach: Accessible by boat or jungle trek. Unspoiled, with basic bungalows. True castaway experience.
• Palm Beach: Northern beach with clear water and good snorkeling. Day trip destination.
• Nature Beach: Undeveloped and peaceful. Eco-lodge accommodation only.

Where to Stay

Accommodation varies dramatically by location:

• Koh Touch: Budget to mid-range. Hostels, guesthouses, and beachfront bungalows. Best for nightlife and meeting travelers. Can be noisy.
• Long Beach/Sok San: Mid-range to luxury. Resort-style properties with more amenities. Peaceful setting, stunning beach. 30-minute boat or jungle walk from Koh Touch.
• Lonely Beach: Budget. Basic bungalows, eco-lodges. True island escape. Limited electricity and services.
• Police Beach: Budget to mid-range. Quieter alternative to Koh Touch. Good for bioluminescence.

Book ahead during peak season (December-February) and public holidays. Many places accept walk-ins during low season.

Getting There

All ferries depart from Sihanoukville:

• Speed boats: 45 minutes. $25-30 round trip. Multiple operators including Speed Ferry Cambodia and Island Speed Ferry. Several departures 8AM-3PM.
• Slow ferries: 2-2.5 hours. $15-20 round trip. Cheaper but less reliable schedules.
• Private boats: Charter available for groups. $100-200+ one way.

Buy tickets at Serendipity Beach pier or book through accommodation. Ferries can be cancelled during rough weather—build flexibility into your schedule.

Getting to Sihanoukville

• From Phnom Penh: Bus 5-6 hours ($12-18), or fly (45 mins, $60-100).
• From Kampot: Bus 2-3 hours ($8-12).
• From Siem Reap: Overnight bus (12 hours) or fly via Phnom Penh.

Food & Dining

Island dining is pricier than mainland but quality is generally good:

• Beach restaurants: Seafood BBQ, Khmer dishes, international food. $6-15 for mains. Fresh catch of the day is usually excellent.
• Western food: Pizza, burgers, pasta available in Koh Touch. $8-15.
• Street food: Limited options in Koh Touch village. Noodles, rice dishes $3-5.
• Resort restaurants: More upscale options on Long Beach. $15-40 for meals.
• Beach BBQs: Evening seafood BBQs are popular. Whole fish, prawns, squid. $10-20.

• Don't swim drunk—currents can be dangerous, and lifeguards are rare
• Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect marine life

• Carry first aid supplies—medical facilities are very limited
• Ensure travel insurance covers island evacuation
