Khmer Language Guide
Khmer (ភាសាខ្មែរ) is Cambodia's official language, spoken by 16 million people. The good news for travelers: it's NOT tonal (unlike Thai or Vietnamese), and even a few basic phrases will transform your Cambodia experience. This guide covers everything from survival vocabulary to a script introduction.
Overview
Khmer belongs to the Austroasiatic language family (related to Vietnamese and Mon). It has the largest alphabet in the world (74 letters), one of the oldest writing systems in Southeast Asia, and a grammar that's surprisingly straightforward — no gendered nouns, no verb conjugation, no articles.

Khmer Script Introduction
The Khmer script (អក្សរខ្មែរ) descends from the Brahmi script of ancient India via the Pallava script. It has 33 consonants, 23 vowels, and 12 independent vowels — making it the world's largest alphabet. You don't need to read Khmer to travel, but recognizing a few key characters helps with signs and menus.

Pronunciation System
- No tones: Unlike Thai (5 tones) or Vietnamese (6 tones), Khmer is non-tonal. A word means the same regardless of pitch
- Consonant clusters: The main challenge — "knyom" (I/me) starts with "kn," which English speakers find tricky. Practice slowly
- Vowels: Many vowels don't exist in English. Listen carefully and mimic what you hear
- Stress: Generally falls on the last syllable of a word
- Gender markers: Males end sentences with "baht" (បាទ), females with "jah" (ចាស) for politeness
