    Day Trips from Siem Reap
There's more to Siem Reap than Angkor Wat

    Day Trips from Siem Reap

    Overview

While Angkor Wat is the star attraction, Siem Reap Province offers incredible day trips that most tourists miss. Jungle-swallowed temples, floating villages, sacred waterfalls, and remote archaeological sites provide a deeper understanding of Cambodia's Khmer heritage and natural beauty.

    Banteay Srei

    37km (1 hour)
    Half day
    Included in Angkor Pass
    Tuk-tuk ($20-25 return)

The "Citadel of Women" — a 10th-century temple with the finest stone carvings in all of Angkor. Pink sandstone covered in intricate bas-reliefs that make Angkor Wat look rough by comparison.

Best for: Art lovers, photographers, history enthusiasts

Tip: Visit early morning (open 7:30am) before tour buses arrive. The carvings catch beautiful light before 9am.

    Beng Mealea

    68km (1.5 hours)
    Half day
    $5 entrance
    Tuk-tuk ($30-40 return) or private car ($35-45)

A massive 12th-century temple completely consumed by jungle. Vines and trees grow through and over the ruins, creating an Indiana Jones atmosphere. Largely unrestored and deeply atmospheric.

Best for: Adventure seekers, photographers, Indiana Jones fans

Tip: Combine with Koh Ker for a full day of remote temples — hire a car for this combo.

    Phnom Kulen National Park

    50km (1.5 hours)
    Full day
    $20 entrance
    Private car ($40-50 return)

A sacred mountain with a waterfall, river of 1,000 lingas (carved riverbed), and a giant reclining Buddha. Where Jayavarman II declared Khmer independence in 802 AD.

Best for: Nature lovers, swimmers, history buffs

Tip: Wear water shoes for the River of 1,000 Lingas — the carved riverbed is slippery but incredible.

    Kompong Phluk Floating Village

    28km (45 min + boat)
    Half day
    $25-35 total
    Tuk-tuk to pier + boat ($25-35 total)

    Half day
    $10-15 total
    Private car ($35-45 return)

The largest floating village on Tonle Sap, far less touristy than Kompong Phluk. Houses perch on impossibly tall stilts, and the community is genuinely welcoming to the few visitors who make the journey.

Beng Mealea is the top recommendation — a jungle-swallowed temple that feels like a discovery rather than a tourist attraction. For nature lovers, Phnom Kulen with its waterfall and sacred riverbed is unforgettable.
