Bokor Hill Station is one of Cambodia's most hauntingly beautiful destinations. Perched at 1,079 meters in the Elephant Mountains, this French colonial retreat offers a fascinating blend of abandoned grandeur, natural beauty, and eerie atmosphere. The cooler temperatures and frequent mist create an otherworldly ambiance that feels a world away from tropical Cambodia.
The winding road up to Bokor passes through pristine national park forest, opening up to dramatic clifftop views, cascading waterfalls, and the ghostly remains of French-era buildings. While modern development has arrived (including a casino resort), much of Bokor retains its atmospheric charm—especially in the early morning fog.
History
A Tale of Two Bokors
Today's Bokor is a study in contrasts: the atmospheric ruins of the French colonial era stand alongside a gleaming new casino resort. While some lament the modern development, the abandoned buildings remain accessible, and the road improvements have made this once-remote destination much easier to visit.
What to See
Old Bokor Palace Hotel
The iconic abandoned hotel is Bokor's most photographed building. Though now fenced off, you can still see this art-deco masterpiece shrouded in mist. The adjacent Catholic church (still standing) is more accessible.
Wat Sampov Pram
A Buddhist temple perched on the cliff edge with spectacular views over Kampot and the coast. On clear days, you can see all the way to Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. The five boats (sampov pram) of legend are visible as rock formations below.
Popokvil Waterfall
A two-tiered waterfall accessible via a short trail. Best visited during or just after rainy season (June-November) when water flow is strongest. Swimming is possible in the pool at the base. Very quiet on weekdays.
Black Palace (Royal Residence)
King Sihanouk's former retreat sits on the highest point with 360° views. The abandoned building is atmospheric and accessible. Climb to the roof for the best panoramas—when the fog clears, you can see both coasts.

Driving Conditions
The road is well-paved but features many hairpin turns and can be foggy, especially in the morning. If you're not confident on a motorbike, take a tour. The descent is steeper than it looks—check your brakes before heading up.
