Kampot Pepper: The World's Finest
Kampot pepper is to pepper what Champagne is to sparkling wine—a protected designation of origin for the world's most prized peppercorn. Grown in the foothills of the Bokor Mountains, Kampot pepper has been cultivated for centuries and was once the seasoning of choice for French colonial cuisine. Today, it's used by Michelin-starred chefs worldwide and remains Cambodia's most famous agricultural export.
Visiting a pepper plantation is one of the signature experiences of Kampot. Tours are free or low-cost, deeply educational, and you'll taste and buy pepper at a fraction of international prices.
Why Kampot Pepper Is Special
- Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) – EU-certified, like Champagne or Parmigiano-Reggiano
- Unique terroir – Mineral-rich quartz soil, microclimate between Bokor Mountains and Gulf of Thailand
- Traditional cultivation – Hand-harvested, sun-dried on bamboo mats, no chemicals
- Complex flavor – Floral, fruity, and aromatic rather than just "hot." Each variety has distinct notes
- History – Traded since the 13th century; nearly destroyed during Khmer Rouge era, now revived
