Cambodia's education system was virtually destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime, which targeted intellectuals and abolished formal schooling. Since the 1990s, the country has rebuilt from scratch. The system follows 6 years of primary, 3 years of lower secondary, and 3 years of upper secondary. Public school is free but families often pay for extra tutoring.
