Cambodia Education System
Literacy rate has risen to ~85%, up from near 0% after the Khmer Rouge
Cambodia's education system was virtually destroyed during the Khmer Rouge regime, which targeted intellectuals and abolished formal schooling. Since the 1990s, the country has rebuilt from scratch. The system follows 6 years of primary, 3 years of lower secondary, and 3 years of upper secondary. Public school is free but families often pay for extra tutoring. English is now the dominant second language, replacing French.
