King's Birthday — Cambodia's Royal Celebration

Every May 14, Cambodia celebrates the birthday of its reigning monarch, King Norodom Sihamoni. While more subdued than festivals like Khmer New Year or the Water Festival, the King's Birthday brings fireworks to the riverfront in front of Phnom Penh's Royal Palace, with buildings decorated in flags and the King's portrait.

Known for his modest lifestyle and dedication to the arts, King Sihamoni is widely respected by Cambodians. He remains unmarried and is considered a unifying figure in Cambodian society. The monarchy in Cambodia is constitutional, and the King serves as head of state and symbol of national unity.
