King's Birthday — Cambodia's Royal Celebration

Every May 13–15, Cambodia celebrates the birthday of its reigning monarch, King Norodom Sihamoni. While more subdued than festivals like Khmer New Year or the Water Festival, the King's Birthday transforms Phnom Penh's Royal Palace district into a spectacular display of lights, loyalty, and fireworks.

For travelers, it's a pleasant time to be in Phnom Penh — the city has a festive but uncrowded atmosphere, and the illuminated Royal Palace makes for stunning evening photography.

• Royal Palace illuminations: The palace complex and surrounding streets are decorated with elaborate lighting displays featuring the King's portrait and national symbols.
• Fireworks: Nightly fireworks displays over the riverside, visible from Sisowath Quay and the palace area.
• Official ceremonies: Royal ceremonies at the palace are attended by dignitaries. These are not open to the public but the surrounding festivities are.
• Portrait displays: Throughout the country, buildings display portraits of the King decorated with flowers and flags.
• Evening atmosphere: Phnom Penh's riverfront becomes a pleasant promenade with families, food vendors, and live entertainment.

King Norodom Sihamoni ascended to the throne in 2004, succeeding his father, the legendary King Norodom Sihanouk. Born in 1953, Sihamoni was educated in Prague and Paris, where he studied classical dance, music, and cinema. He served as Cambodia's ambassador to UNESCO before becoming king.

Known for his modest lifestyle and dedication to the arts, King Sihamoni is widely respected by Cambodians. He remains unmarried and is considered a unifying figure in Cambodian society. The monarchy in Cambodia is constitutional, and the King serves as head of state and symbol of national unity.

• No major disruption: Unlike Khmer New Year, transport and businesses are only mildly affected.
• Combine with other May events: The Royal Ploughing Ceremony and Visak Bochea also fall in May — plan a multi-festival trip.
• Be respectful: The monarchy is deeply revered. Lèse-majesté laws exist — never criticize the royal family.
