Cambodia Visa Options for Digital Nomads

Cambodia does not have a dedicated digital nomad visa. However, the country's flexible visa system makes it one of the easier places in Southeast Asia to live and work as a remote worker. The Business E Visa combined with affordable long-term extensions has become the de facto digital nomad visa — used by thousands of remote workers who have based themselves in Cambodia.

The system is refreshingly simple: arrive, get a Business E Visa on arrival, then extend it through the General Department of Immigration or a visa agent for as long as you want to stay. No actual business registration is required for the Business E Visa, and the process involves minimal bureaucracy.

Cambodia is also one of the few countries in the region with no dedicated digital nomad visa requirements, no registration obligations for short-stay remote workers, and no practical enforcement of work permit rules against foreigners working remotely for overseas companies.

The Business E Visa (type EB) is Cambodia's standard entry visa for anyone with business or professional purposes — and in practice, it's used by the vast majority of digital nomads and remote workers who stay more than a month.

Why it's the best choice for digital nomads:

• Available on arrival at all international airports and major land borders ($35)
• Can be extended multiple times: 1, 3, 6, or 12 months per extension
• No actual business registration, company formation, or employer documentation required
• Multiple-entry (you can leave and return freely during the validity period)
• Extendable indefinitely — there is no maximum consecutive stay limit
• Processing through a visa agent is same-day or next-day; no need to leave the country

The E Visa can be obtained at the airport immigration counter. Specify "E" type, not "T" (tourist). If you arrive with an online e-visa (which is tourist type), you will not be able to extend it for more than one month, and you will need to switch to an E Visa for long-term stays.

Once you have a Business E Visa, you can extend your stay through the General Department of Immigration in Phnom Penh or through licensed visa agents. Extensions are same-day or next-day and multiple-entry.

The Ordinary Resident Visa (also called the ER visa) is designed for long-term residents who want more stability than the E Visa extension system offers. It costs $300–500/year and provides a 1-year stay authorization with multiple-entry.

The ER visa requires a local sponsor — typically a Cambodian employer, a registered Cambodian company, or a licensed visa/immigration agent who acts as sponsor. You do not need to actually work for the sponsor; this is a formality managed by agents for a fee.

Who should consider the ER visa:

• Expats who have been in Cambodia for 2+ years and want a more formal resident status
• Those who want a document clearly marked as "resident" rather than "business visitor"
• Anyone opening a Cambodian bank account who needs resident documentation

For most digital nomads, the Business E Visa annual extension is simpler and cheaper. The ER visa is more suitable for those who want the explicit "resident" designation.

Benefits include a 10-year visa, multiple-entry, ability to work, and no annual renewal requirement. The program is administered by the Ministry of Interior.

Border runs — exiting Cambodia and immediately re-entering to get a new visa — were a widespread strategy in the 2010s. The situation has changed:

• Cambodia immigration has become more systematic; frequent border runs are tracked in the system
• Some border crossings (especially Poipet, Bavet) occasionally ask for proof of accommodation or funds for obvious border-runners
• There is no official ban on border runs, but officials have discretion to refuse entry if they believe you are exploiting the visa system
• The 12-month E Visa extension costs $290 and eliminates the need for border runs entirely — it is a far better option

Border runs are still done by some travelers, particularly on Tourist visas seeking one-month extensions. For digital nomads planning a meaningful stay, however, the extension system is superior in every way: cheaper per day, less hassle, and eliminates any border run risk.

Regardless of which visa you use, Cambodia's territorial tax system means that income earned remotely for foreign clients or employers is generally not subject to Cambodian income tax. You become a Cambodia tax resident after 182 days in a calendar year, but this does not create a tax obligation on foreign-sourced income.
