A massive, remote temple complex with face towers and unique multi-armed Avalokiteshvara carvings — Cambodia's most underrated temple.
Banteay Chhmar is one of the largest and most significant Angkorian temple complexes outside the Angkor region, yet it remains virtually unknown to most visitors. Built by Jayavarman VII in honor of his son and four military heroes who died protecting him, the complex is comparable in scale to Angkor Thom. The temple features face towers similar to the Bayon and unique bas-reliefs including extraordinary multi-armed Avalokiteshvara (32 arms) carvings found nowhere else in Khmer art. Much of the temple remains in a state of dramatic collapse, with enormous stone blocks jumbled together and vegetation growing through the ruins. A community-based tourism initiative allows visitors to stay with local families, explore with local guides, and contribute directly to the rural economy.
