A sacred hilltop temple complex with Killing Caves, bat caves, and panoramic sunset views over Battambang's rice paddies.

Phnom Sampeau ("Ship Mountain") is a limestone hill about 12 km southwest of Battambang city, topped with a complex of Buddhist pagodas and offering some of the most dramatic sunset views in Cambodia. The site has a darker history: during the Khmer Rouge era, the Killing Caves on the hillside were used as execution sites, and a memorial shrine within the caves now commemorates the victims. At sunset, a spectacular natural phenomenon occurs: millions of bats emerge from a cave at the base of the hill in a dense, swirling column that can last for over an hour, creating one of Cambodia's most unique wildlife spectacles. The temple complex at the summit features active monasteries, meditation spaces, and a giant golden Buddha statue.
