A border-region rest house temple along the ancient Angkorian royal road — part of the empire's highway system.

Prasat Ta Muen is one of over 120 "fire houses" (dharmasala) built along the ancient Angkorian royal roads by King Jayavarman VII. These structures served as rest houses for travelers and pilgrims along the empire's extensive highway network connecting major temple cities. Located near the Thai border in Oddar Meanchey Province, the site actually comprises three structures: Prasat Ta Muen (the fire house), Prasat Ta Muen Thom (a larger temple on the escarpment), and Prasat Ta Muen Toch (a small chapel). The location along the Dangrek escarpment offers atmospheric views and a sense of the vast scale of the Angkorian road network that once connected the empire from Angkor to Phimai in present-day Thailand.
