Sambor Prei Kuk is the most significant pre-Angkorian archaeological site in Cambodia, predating Angkor Wat by over 500 years. As the capital of the Chenla kingdom (Isanapura), it contains over 100 temples spread across three main groups in a forest setting. The site features unique octagonal temples found nowhere else in Southeast Asia, along with carved flying palaces, lion guardian figures, and elaborate lintel decorations. The temples are built of brick with sandstone decorative elements, and many still retain traces of the original stucco ornamentation. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017, Sambor Prei Kuk provides crucial evidence of the cultural and architectural traditions that predated and influenced the Angkorian period. The forest setting with massive trees growing around and through the temples creates an atmosphere reminiscent of Ta Prohm.
