Not the famous Angkor Ta Prohm — this lesser-known but beautifully carved temple sits beside a popular lake south of Phnom Penh.

Often confused with the famous "Tomb Raider" Ta Prohm at Angkor, the Ta Prohm at Tonle Bati is a separate 12th-century Buddhist temple built by Jayavarman VII, located about 33 km south of Phnom Penh. The temple is smaller but features excellent bas-reliefs and carved narrative scenes depicting daily life, battles, and Buddhist legends. Adjacent is the lake of Tonle Bati, a popular recreation spot for Phnom Penh residents on weekends, with wooden platform restaurants extending over the water serving grilled fish and Khmer dishes. Nearby, the much smaller Yeay Peau temple (11th century) is also worth a visit.

    Highlights

    • ✦ Fine bas-relief carvings
    • ✦ Lakeside location

    • ✦ Much quieter than its Angkor namesake
    • ✦ Floating restaurants at adjacent lake
