Battambang: Cambodia's Charming Countryside Gem

While Siem Reap and Phnom Penh dominate tourist itineraries, Battambang quietly charms visitors with its colonial-era architecture, vibrant art scene, and gateway to authentic Cambodian countryside experiences. This relaxed provincial capital offers a pace of life that has all but disappeared from the kingdom's larger cities.

The Famous Bamboo Train

Once a vital transport link for rural communities, the "norry" or bamboo train has become Battambang's most famous attraction. The concept is simple: bamboo platforms on wheels powered by small motors race along abandoned railway tracks through stunning rice paddy landscapes. When two platforms meet, the lighter one is simply dismantled to let the other pass.

The experience has been relocated and somewhat commercialized, but it remains thrilling and unique. The 30-minute round trip offers beautiful countryside views and insight into Cambodian ingenuity. Go in the late afternoon when the light is golden and temperatures cooler.

Colonial Architecture

Battambang's French colonial heritage is visible throughout the city center. Shophouses with ornate facades line the Sangker River, while grand buildings like the former Governor's Residence showcase elegant colonial design. The riverside promenade is perfect for evening strolls past these architectural treasures.

Unlike Phnom Penh's increasingly modern skyline, Battambang has preserved much of its historic character. The old town area feels like stepping back in time, with traditional markets, Buddhist temples, and century-old buildings coexisting peacefully.

Phare Ponleu Selpak

This remarkable arts school and NGO has transformed lives through arts education since 1994. Visitors can tour the campus, watch students practicing circus arts, music, and visual arts, and attend spectacular evening performances. The shows blend traditional Khmer culture with contemporary circus arts, often addressing social issues through entertainment.

The organization has helped thousands of disadvantaged young Cambodians build careers in the arts, and performances in Battambang are more intimate than the larger Phare shows in Siem Reap.

Temple Exploration

Battambang province is home to numerous ancient temples, many receiving far fewer visitors than their Angkor counterparts. Wat Ek Phnom features beautiful ruins surrounded by working rice paddies. Wat Banan, often called "mini Angkor Wat," requires climbing 358 steps but rewards with panoramic views.

Phnom Sampeu holds darker significance—the killing caves where Khmer Rouge executed prisoners—but also offers stunning sunset views and the nightly exodus of millions of bats from the mountainside caves.

Rural Adventures

Rent a bicycle or motorbike and explore the surrounding countryside. The roads between rice paddies lead to villages where life continues much as it has for generations. Traditional craft villages produce fish paste, rice paper, and other products using methods unchanged for centuries.

Cooking classes in Battambang often include market visits and trips to organic farms, offering deep immersion into Cambodian food culture. The slower pace allows for meaningful interactions with farmers and artisans.

Getting There

Buses from Phnom Penh take 5-6 hours through scenic countryside. From Siem Reap, the journey is 3-4 hours. For a unique experience, consider the boat trip along the Sangker River from Siem Reap—slow, sometimes challenging during dry season, but unforgettable.

Where to Stay

The riverfront area offers the best base, with boutique hotels in restored colonial buildings and excellent dining options. Budget travelers will find comfortable guesthouses throughout the city center. Two to three nights allows time to fully appreciate Battambang's charms.
