Cambodia's Hidden Island Paradise: A Complete Beach Guide

Escape the crowds and discover pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back island life on Cambodia's beautiful islands.

While Thailand's islands get most of the attention, Cambodia's coast hides some of Southeast Asia's last unspoiled beach paradises. From the backpacker haven of Koh Rong to the serene shores of Koh Rong Sanloem, these islands offer everything from wild parties to peaceful solitude—often just a short boat ride apart.

    Koh Rong: The Main Attraction

Cambodia's second-largest island has transformed from a sleepy fishing community to a vibrant destination over the past decade. Long Beach stretches for 7 kilometers of powdery white sand, while Koh Touch village pulses with beach bars, restaurants, and nightlife that rivals anywhere in Southeast Asia.

Despite development, much of Koh Rong remains wild. The interior jungle hides waterfalls and hiking trails, while remote beaches on the western shore require boat access and offer true Robinson Crusoe experiences. The bioluminescent plankton that light up the water at night remain one of the island's most magical attractions.

Koh Rong Sanloem: The Quieter Sister

Just a short boat ride from Koh Rong, Sanloem offers a more relaxed atmosphere. Saracen Bay, a crescent of pristine sand on the eastern shore, hosts most of the island's accommodations ranging from backpacker hostels to boutique resorts. The bay's calm, shallow waters are perfect for swimming year-round.

The western shore's Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach live up to their names, offering hammock-strung bungalows with zero cell reception and little to do except swim, read, and watch spectacular sunsets. It's the antidote to over-connected modern life.

    Koh Tonsay (Rabbit Island)

Near the town of Kep, this small island offers the most accessible island experience in Cambodia. A 20-minute boat ride delivers you to simple bamboo bungalows, fresh crab grilled on the beach, and complete relaxation. It's perfect for a day trip or overnight escape from the mainland.

    Koh Ta Kiev: Off-Grid Paradise

For those seeking true escape, Koh Ta Kiev operates almost entirely off the grid. Most accommodations have limited or no electricity, no WiFi, and embrace the back-to-nature experience. It's popular with travelers looking for digital detox retreats and yoga experiences.

    Koh Sdach Archipelago

The "King's Island" group remains remarkably undeveloped, with a local fishing community and just a handful of guesthouses. The snorkeling and diving here rivals anywhere in Cambodia, with pristine reefs and abundant marine life. It's best for adventurous travelers comfortable with basic accommodations.

    Getting There

Most islands are accessible from Sihanoukville, with regular ferry services to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Sanloem. Speed boats take 40-60 minutes, while slow ferries take around 2 hours but offer a more affordable option. Koh Tonsay is reached from Kep, while Koh Ta Kiev and Koh Sdach require private boats or less frequent services.

    Best Time to Visit

The dry season (November to April) offers the best weather with calm seas, clear skies, and ideal beach conditions. The rainy season (May to October) brings rough seas that can disrupt ferry services, though prices drop significantly and the islands are beautifully lush and uncrowded.

    What to Pack

Bring reef-safe sunscreen, good sandals for rocky areas, a waterproof bag for boat transfers, and sufficient cash as ATMs are rare or non-existent on most islands. Most islands now have basic medical facilities, but prescription medications should be brought from the mainland.

    Responsible Island Tourism

Cambodia's islands face increasing pressure from development and tourism. Support local businesses, minimize plastic use, respect coral reefs while snorkeling, and choose accommodations with sustainable practices. These small actions help preserve these paradises for future visitors.
