Most visitors to Siem Reap focus exclusively on the Angkor temple complex — and while Angkor Wat deserves every moment you give it, the surrounding region offers remarkable experiences that many travelers miss entirely.

Tonle Sap Floating Villages

Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, supports entire communities that live, work, and go to school on the water. A boat tour of the floating villages reveals a way of life completely unlike anything most visitors have encountered.

Kompong Khleang is the recommended village — it's a genuine working community rather than a tourist attraction. The tall stilt houses, fish farms, and bustling waterway life offer authentic insight into rural Cambodian existence. Allow half a day including transport.

Banteay Srei

Located 25 km northeast of the main Angkor complex, Banteay Srei is a 10th-century temple renowned for the extraordinary intricacy of its pink sandstone carvings. The detail and preservation here surpass anything in the main temple circuit.
