Sihanoukville Beaches Guide 2026 — Otres, Serendipity, Sokha & More
Complete guide to Sihanoukville's mainland beaches. Otres Beach, Serendipity, Sokha, Independence Beach — which is best, costs, facilities, and honest reviews.
    Sihanoukville

    Sihanoukville Beaches Guide

Six mainland beaches, each with a different personality. From party-central Serendipity to peaceful Otres 2—here's an honest, no-hype guide to which beach is right for you.

    Overview

Sihanoukville's reputation is complicated. Heavy Chinese-led development since 2018 transformed the city center into a construction site, but the beaches—particularly Otres and the southern stretches—remain genuinely beautiful. The key is knowing which beaches to visit and which to skip.

For world-class beaches, the nearby islands (Koh Rong, Koh Rong Sanloem) are far superior. But if you're transiting through Sihanoukville or want easy mainland access, Otres Beach and Sokha Beach still deliver.

    Otres Beach

    VibeBackpacker & Chill
    Sand⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐⭐

Otres Beach (officially Otres 1) is Sihanoukville's best mainland beach—a long curve of golden sand with beach bars, hammocks, and a relaxed atmosphere that recalls pre-development Sihanoukville. The water is calm and swimmable, the sunsets are excellent, and the vibe is genuinely laid-back.

Crowd: Budget travelers, couples, digital nomads

    Costs: Sunbed $2–3, beer $1, meal $3–5

    Tip

Best section: the area between Otres Market and Papa Cambodia. Arrive before 10 AM to claim a good sunbed.

    Otres 2 (Quiet End)

    VibeSecluded & Peaceful
    Sand⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐

The quieter southern extension of Otres Beach. Fewer vendors, cleaner sand, and a more resort-like atmosphere. Several boutique guesthouses and eco-lodges sit directly on the beach. This is where Sihanoukville's "old magic" still lives.

    Crowd: Couples, families, long-stay travelers

Costs: Sunbed free with drink, beer $1.50, meal $4–7

    Tip

Stay at a beachfront guesthouse for direct access. The road in is rough—use a tuk-tuk ($3 from town center).

    Serendipity Beach

    VibeTourist & Party
    Sand⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐⭐⭐

The most famous beach in Sihanoukville—and the most polarizing. Serendipity is the main tourist strip where ferry boats depart to the islands. It's busy, commercialized, and the sand quality has declined due to construction. However, it has the most facilities and the easiest access.

    Crowd: Backpackers, party-goers, ferry passengers

    Costs: Sunbed $2, beer $0.75, meal $3–6

    Tip

Best used as a transit point for island ferries rather than a beach destination. If staying, walk to the quieter left (south) end.

    Ochheuteal Beach

    VibeLocal & Mixed
    Sand⭐⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐⭐

Stretching south from Serendipity, Ochheuteal is a long public beach popular with Cambodian families on weekends. It's more authentic than Serendipity—cheaper food, local atmosphere, and better sand as you walk south. The far southern end connects to Otres.

    Crowd: Locals, budget tourists, families

    Costs: Sunbed $1–2, beer $0.50–1, meal $2–4

    Tip

Walk south past the main vendor area to find cleaner, quieter stretches. Great for people-watching on Khmer holidays.

    Sokha Beach

    VibeResort & Upscale
    Sand⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Sihanoukville's most beautiful mainland beach is mostly controlled by the Sokha Beach Resort. The sand is powdery white, the water is crystal clear, and the beach is immaculately maintained. Public access is limited to a small section on the eastern end.

Crowd: Hotel guests, families, luxury travelers

Costs: Day pass $10–15, or free with hotel stay

    Tip

Purchase a day pass ($10–15) to access the resort section with loungers, pools, and restaurants. Worth it for the quality.

    Independence Beach

    VibeQuiet & Local
    Sand⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Water⭐⭐⭐⭐
    Facilities⭐⭐

Named after the Independence Hotel perched above it, this is one of Sihanoukville's most scenic but undervisited beaches. A small, sheltered cove with decent snorkeling near the rocks. Less developed means fewer hassles but fewer facilities.

    Crowd: Locals, couples, budget travelers

Costs: Sunbed free, beer $0.75, meal $2–4

    Tip

Bring your own snorkeling gear. Best in the morning before afternoon waves pick up. The access path from the road is steep.

    Beach Tips

    • Best months: November–April (dry season). July–September can bring jellyfish and rough water
    • Sunscreen: Bring reef-safe sunscreen—it's expensive or unavailable locally
    • Valuables: Don't leave bags unattended. Use a waterproof pouch for phone and money
    • Vendors: Beach vendors sell fruit, drinks, and massages. Negotiate prices before accepting. A polite "no thank you" works—repeat if needed
    • Getting around: Tuk-tuk from town center to Otres costs $3–5. Rent a motorbike for $5–7/day to beach-hop
