Cambodian Silk Industry
Khmer silk weaving dates back over 1,000 years and uses unique techniques like ikat (hol) dyeing
Cambodia has a rich silk tradition spanning over a millennium. The distinctive Khmer ikat technique (called hol) involves tie-dyeing threads before weaving, creating intricate patterns. Traditional silk is woven on wooden looms, primarily in villages around Takeo, Kompong Cham, and Siem Reap. The sampot (silk skirt) is the national garment. Artisan organizations are reviving the craft after it nearly disappeared under the Khmer Rouge.
