Cambodia Budget Overview
Cambodia remains one of the most affordable destinations in Southeast Asia in 2026. A budget traveler can get by on $25-40 per day, a mid-range traveler on $50-100 per day, and luxury travelers will find excellent value at $150-300 per day — a fraction of what similar quality costs in Thailand or Vietnam. The US dollar is widely accepted alongside the Cambodian riel (KHR), so you rarely need to worry about currency conversion for day-to-day spending.
Prices vary significantly between cities. Phnom Penh is the most expensive for rent and dining out, while Siem Reap offers excellent tourist-area value. Provincial cities like Battambang and Kampot are notably cheaper across the board. Island destinations (Koh Rong, Koh Rong Sanloem) carry a 30-50% premium on food and accommodation due to logistics, but even island prices are modest by global standards.
Currency Tips for Visitors
Dual currency system: Cambodia uses both the US dollar (USD) and the Cambodian riel (KHR). Most prices in tourist areas are quoted in dollars. Change under $1 is given in riel at roughly 4,000 KHR = $1.
ATMs: Available in all cities. Most dispense USD, some offer KHR. Expect $4-5 in withdrawal fees per transaction. ACLEDA Bank and ABA Bank ATMs are the most widely available.
Cards vs cash: Upscale restaurants, hotels, and some shops accept Visa and Mastercard, but Cambodia is still heavily cash-based. Markets, tuk-tuks, street food vendors, and smaller guesthouses are cash only. Always carry small bills — breaking a $50 or $100 note at a small vendor can be difficult.
Tipping: Not traditionally expected, but appreciated. Rounding up or leaving $1 at restaurants is common among tourists. Tip guides and drivers $2-5 for day tours.
