Overview

Banlung is the provincial capital of Ratanakiri, one of Cambodia's most remote and least-visited provinces. Located in the northeastern highlands near the borders with Vietnam and Laos, this region offers a dramatically different experience from the temples and beaches that define most Cambodia itineraries.

The area is home to several indigenous ethnic groups—primarily Kreung, Tampuan, and Jarai—who maintain distinct languages, animist beliefs, and traditional lifestyles. The landscape is defined by the famous Yeak Laom volcanic crater lake, numerous waterfalls, and vast tracts of protected jungle including Virachey National Park.

Best Time to Visit

Ratanakiri has distinct seasons that significantly affect travel:

• November to February: Best time—dry weather, cooler temperatures, and roads in good condition. Waterfalls have good flow from recent rains. Peak season for the region.
• March to May: Hot and dry. Waterfalls may reduce to trickles. Dusty conditions. Still accessible.
• June to October: Wet season—waterfalls are spectacular but roads become difficult. Some areas inaccessible. Lush green landscapes. Bring appropriate rain gear.

Unlike most of Cambodia, Ratanakiri can be cool in December-January, especially in the evening. Bring a light jacket.

Things to Do

Yeak Laom Crater Lake

The region's star attraction is this stunning volcanic crater lake, approximately 4,000 years old and almost perfectly circular. The lake is about 800 meters in diameter and up to 48 meters deep, with remarkably clear water ideal for swimming.

Getting to Banlung

• Via Stung Treng: 2-3 hours from Stung Treng, can be combined with Mekong flooded forests.
