Kampot River Cruises 2026 — Sunset Cruises, Fireflies & Kayaking
Guide to Kampot river cruises. Sunset boats from $8, firefly tours, kayaking, operators, prices, and tips for the signature Kampot experience.

    Kampot River Cruises Guide 2026

Drifting down the Praek Tuek Chhu river at sunset with the Elephant Mountains as your backdrop — it's the quintessential Kampot experience.

    Overview

The Kampot river (Praek Tuek Chhu) winds through dramatic limestone karst scenery past pepper farms, salt fields, and mangrove forests. A sunset cruise is the #1 activity in Kampot and shouldn't be missed. After dark, the mangroves light up with thousands of synchronized fireflies.

Most cruises depart from the riverside promenade in Kampot town. You can choose from shared boat tours, private charters, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding.

    Best Combo

Book a combined sunset + firefly tour ($12–18). You get the golden hour photography, then as darkness falls, the boat glides into the mangroves for the firefly show.

    Tips & What to Bring

    • Camera: Sunset photography is spectacular. Bring a waterproof case or bag.
    • Insect repellent: Essential for firefly tours — mosquitoes are active at dusk.
    • Light jacket: River breeze can be cool after sunset, especially December–February.
    • Sunscreen: Apply before boarding for afternoon departures.
    • Cash: Most operators accept USD or Riel. Cards are rarely accepted on boats.
    • No flash photography: During firefly tours, turn off flash — it disturbs the fireflies.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Most sunset cruises depart at 4:00–4:30 PM and return around 6:30–7:00 PM. The golden hour starts around 5:30 PM. Dry season (November–April) offers the clearest skies and most spectacular sunsets.
