A beautifully restored "flat" temple with stunning lintels and pediments — one of the most complete temples in Angkor.

Banteay Samré is one of the best-restored and most complete temples in the Angkor region, yet it receives a fraction of the visitors of the main circuit temples. Named after the Samré, an ancient people of Indochina, it was built in the same period as Angkor Wat and shares many architectural features. The temple was restored using the anastylosis method by the French EFEO, resulting in an exceptionally well-preserved structure. The raised walkway, concentric galleries, and central tower create a harmonious composition, while the lintels and pediments featuring scenes from the Ramayana and the life of Krishna are among the finest in the Angkor region.

    Highlights

    • ✦ Exceptionally well-restored condition
    • ✦ Fine Ramayana lintels and pediments
    • ✦ Raised walkways and moat
