A jewel of pink sandstone with the finest, most intricate carvings in all of Angkor — often called the "jewel of Khmer art."

Banteay Srei is universally regarded as having the finest carvings of any temple in the Angkor region. Built from pinkish-red sandstone (which gives it a warm glow in morning and late afternoon light), the temple features extraordinarily detailed decorative wall carvings considered the finest examples of classical Khmer art. Despite being relatively small, the temple's intricate lintel carvings, elaborate pediments depicting Hindu mythological scenes, and perfectly preserved devatas are unmatched. The temple is dedicated to Shiva and was uniquely built not by a king but by Yajnavaraha, a Brahmin counselor. Located 25 km from the main Angkor complex, it requires a separate trip but is absolutely worth the journey. André Malraux famously attempted to steal several lintels in 1923, leading to his arrest and trial — an incident that inspired his novel "The Royal Way."
