Phnom Kulen (Mount Kulen) holds immense historical and spiritual significance as the birthplace of the Khmer Empire. It was here in 802 AD that King Jayavarman II declared independence from Java and proclaimed himself devaraja (god-king), establishing the foundations of the empire that would build Angkor. Today, the mountain is a national park and active pilgrimage site for Cambodians. Key attractions include a massive 8-meter reclining Buddha carved from a natural sandstone boulder (Preah Ang Thom), a sacred waterfall popular for swimming, and riverbed linga carvings similar to Kbal Spean. Recent LIDAR surveys have revealed an entire lost city (Mahendraparvata) beneath the jungle canopy, with roads, canals, and temple foundations still being studied by archaeologists.
