The enigmatic state temple with 216 serene stone faces gazing in all four directions from 54 gothic towers.

The Bayon is arguably the most visually striking and mysterious temple in the Angkor complex. Built as the state temple of Jayavarman VII, it sits at the exact center of Angkor Thom. The temple's most distinctive feature is the multitude of massive stone faces, each with a serene, slightly smiling expression thought to represent either the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or Jayavarman VII himself. The outer gallery contains an extraordinary 1.2 kilometers of bas-relief carvings depicting both mythological scenes and everyday Khmer life — market scenes, cockfights, fishing, childbirth, and military battles against the Chams. This rare documentation of 12th-century daily life makes the Bayon invaluable to historians. The temple's complex three-dimensional layout and narrow corridors create an otherworldly atmosphere, particularly in early morning light.
