Ta Keo holds a unique place in Angkorian architectural history as the first temple built entirely of sandstone, marking the transition from brick and laterite to sandstone construction. The temple was left mysteriously unfinished — no decorative carvings were ever added to its walls — which actually provides valuable insight into Khmer construction techniques. Scholars believe construction was halted either because the king died or because lightning struck the temple, which was considered an inauspicious omen. The five towers rise to 22 meters on an impossibly steep five-tiered pyramid, creating one of the most imposing and geometrically pure structures in Angkor. The steep, narrow stairways make the climb genuinely challenging but reward visitors with spectacular views.
