    Overview

Lao citizens enjoy 30-day visa-free access to Cambodia as neighbouring ASEAN countries with deep historical, cultural, and linguistic ties. The Laos-Cambodia border crossing at Dong Kralor/Veun Kham is one of the most popular overland routes in Southeast Asia.

Both countries share Theravada Buddhist traditions, Mekong River geography, and similar cuisine. Many Lao travellers visit Cambodia for temple exploration at Angkor Wat, beach holidays on the southern coast, and family or business connections in Phnom Penh.

Entry is straightforward: present your valid passport at any border crossing for a 30-day stamp at no charge.

    ASEAN & Bilateral Benefits

    Getting to Cambodia from Laos

    Overland Routes (Most Popular)

    • 4000 Islands → Stung Treng → Phnom Penh: Most popular route. Buses from Pakse or minivans from Don Det. Cross at Dong Kralor/Veun Kham border.
    • Pakse → Stung Treng → Siem Reap: Longer but connects to Angkor Wat. Usually requires overnight in Stung Treng or Kratie.
    • Mekong River Route: Scenic slow boat available seasonally (best November-February). Check water levels.

    Flights

    • Vientiane → Phnom Penh: Lao Airlines and Cambodia Angkor Air operate direct flights (~2 hours).
    • Vientiane → Siem Reap: Limited direct flights; often connect via Bangkok.

    Border Crossing Hours

The Dong Kralor/Veun Kham border operates 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM daily. Cross early to ensure same-day connections to Phnom Penh or Siem Reap.

    Border Crossing Tips

    Dong Kralor/Veun Kham Border

    • The main (and only practical) land crossing between Laos and Cambodia
    • Exit Laos first, then walk/drive to Cambodia immigration
    • No visa fee for Lao citizens — just passport stamp
    • Exchange Lao Kip to USD at the border (rates vary; exchange in advance if possible)

    Practical Tips

    • Cross early morning for best onward transport connections
    • Book onward transport in advance during peak season (November-February)
    • Bring USD cash — Lao Kip not accepted in Cambodia
    • The road from border to Stung Treng is well-paved (~60 km)

    Health & Insurance

    Health Considerations

    • Similar climate: Both countries have tropical climates; health precautions are similar
    • Water: Drink bottled water only, as in Laos
    • Mosquitoes: Dengue risk exists; use repellent, especially during rainy season
    • Malaria: Low risk in tourist areas; higher in remote border forests

    Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is recommended. Lao public healthcare does not cover overseas treatment. Hospital quality in Cambodia varies outside Phnom Penh.

    • Ensure coverage includes medical evacuation if visiting remote areas
    • Phnom Penh has better medical facilities than most Lao provincial hospitals

    Frequently Asked Questions

No, Lao citizens enjoy visa-free entry to Cambodia for stays up to 30 days as part of ASEAN agreements and bilateral relations between neighbouring countries.
